Rocket fuel: Bottoms up for contaminated water


"It'll make you sick, perhaps quite literally, this new effort by the Bush administration to overrule scientists and side with polluters on yet another risk to public health. This time it is perchlorate, a component of rocket fuel linked to thyroid problems in pregnant women, newborns and young children.
For six years now, career Environmental Protection Agency scientists have tried to persuade the administration to accept the obvious and agree that perchlorate contamination poses a serious risk to the public and should be regulated.
Instead, the administration and the Pentagon have distorted the science to justify not regulating perchlorate. It is preparing to set the maximum perchlorate contamination at 15 times what the EPA suggested just six years ago.
So much for public health."
